Pearl Report - 明珠檔案 - In the Blood - 2008-12-14
In Hong Kong every year, there are 1000 new cases of leukaemia, and about 200 of them would need a bone marrow transplant for a chance to survive. Although the number of registered donors has been rising globally, some misconceptions still deter people from the cause. Many people are wary about signing up as donors of bone marrow stem cells which can cure leukaemia patients. They expect to be operated on under general anaesthesia. But now, doctors say there is a new way to get the same stem cells, that’s much like giving blood. Reporter Naomi Kwok looks at new medical advances which minimizes risks for donors and follows desperate leukaemia patients’ quest for marrow.
