World Music: Deolinda, "Fado Toninho"
Although Deolinda’s music gets its inspiration from Fado, the members have obviously cherry-picked those elements they wish to keep and those they do not: the strong female vocalist, but no funereal garb, the winsome guitar lines but absent the Portuguese guitar, and plenty of irony --but without fatalism. There is far more sunlight than moonlinght in Deolinda's brand of Fado. "Fado Toninho" is an up front challenge. "My poor little excuse for a boy, You're too weak for me!" sings Ana Bacalhau and she may be right; the lady has attitude. The video, with its hip whimsey is a demonstration of what can be done with a small budget and a lot of creativity.Purchase the CD on AmazonWatch a live performance by Deolinda at WOMEX 2009!
