Hovertank 3D
Many people consider this 1991 DOS game to be the first 3D PC game, or at least the first first-person-shooter. I don't know about that, a lot depends on your definition and whether or not you want to include flight simulators or not. Regardless, the significance of this game shouldn't be minimized, because you can trace the Doom and Quake series directly back to Hovertank 3D. It was the first 3D release from id software. You control your ship with the directional arrows, you have a fire key (CTL) and a thrust key (ALT). The game play is sort of a mix between Battlezone and Defender. You transverse a maze rescuing humans and fighting mutants. The basics, from idsoftware.com: You are mercenary Brick Sledge, and you've been hired by an unknown organization to rescue people from cities targeted for limited nuclear strikes. With an energy cannon as your main weapon, you must race against the clock, blasting away at nuclear mutants, armored patrols and other terrors bent on your destruction. Innocent lives depend on you and your Hovertank. (more...)
