In this first of two segments from the African American Research episode of the Ancestors series, meet Collete DeVerge, who begins the search for her African ancestors after a chance meeting with Alex Haley.   Collette, and other members of the California African American Genealogical Society, share the rewards and challenges of searching for the ancestors, and how learning basic research skills made their family history quest more enjoyable and successful. Colette shares her experience of visiting Africa, in particular Goree Island, site of one of the largest "slave castles" in which Africans were imprisoned before being sent to the Americas and a life of slavery.
