Store Clerk Wrestles Robber’s Gun Away
Tweet A convenience store clerk jumped into action to disarm a robber who was trying to hold up his store. The armed robbery was caught on surveillance tape. It happened Friday, March 18 at the Fast-N-Friendly store at Holly Street and Florida Avenue. The video shows a customer walking in and, before the door closes, an armed man sticks a gun in the customer’s back and announces he's robbing the More.. place along with another suspect. Then, the suspects demand the clerk open the cash register. While the other suspect takes the cash, the armed suspect points his gun at the clerk. That is when the clerk lunges across the counter and attempts to grab the gun. The two wrestle down one of the aisles. The clerk is Cody Purcell, 24, and is a military veteran. Purcell once told the convenience store manager that if the store was ever robbed, he would put up a fight. A family member of Purcell confirmed he was in the Army for nearly two years and was deployed overseas to serve in Iraq. A short while after the scuffle, it was Purcell who gained control of the gun and was pointing it at the suspect while escorting him and the other suspect out of the store. The suspect tells Purcell, "Let me go, and we'll be gone, I swear to God!" The robbers only made off with about $70. After the scuffle, the manager of the store says Purcell realized the gun was actually an air gun. The manager says the suspects still haven't been caught. If you recognize the suspects, call Denver Police at 720-913-2000.
