Health Care System Reforms (July 29, 1991)
House Energy and Commerce - Health Care System Reforms - 19816-1-DVD - House Energy and Commerce Committee. Subcommittee on Health and the Environment. The subcommittee heard testimony on proposals for reform of the U.S. health care system. The proposals were intended to increase the number of people in America with access to health care, and to reduce the cost of health care to the nation’s citizens and businesses. Legislators and two domestic policy analysts testified on various proposals to improve the nation's health care system, which was also compared with the Canadian health care system. Canada maintains a universal health care insurance program for all Canadian citizens. Subcommittee Chairman Waxman cited statistics stating the cost of health care would increase 12 to 15 percent per year over the next five years, resulting in greater financial burdens on employers and fewer numbers of Americans covered by health care insurance.
