Digital Tipping Point: Amy Wohl, e-market maven 01 (2005)
This is one of many short video segments which will be added to the Digital Tipping Point (DTP) archive. In this segment, Amy Wohl talks a bit about how a small upstart company could be a bigger company that has mastered a market. Open source software is a disruptive technology, and Amy is a university lecturer and consultant who says that disruptive technologies change the rules of the game in markets they are attacking. She says that they change the rules by creating whole new markets. Big companies don’t want to attack small markets, because there's not enough money there for the big companies. By the time the big companies realize that the markets have changed, it's too late for them to be an important player. Small companies create the new markets by bringing in new technology, or different pricing, or how the products are used, or who uses it.
