Wayne Miyata - Vintage Surf Footage
Wayne Miyata was one of the first surfers to be filmed doing a successful "tube ride" through a large wave. The footage, taken off Ala Moana in Oahu, Hawaii, in the early 1960s, was included in "The Endless Summer." The native Hawaiian was known to many Southern Californians for his fine hand-crafted surfboards. He was an expert in the old-style techniques of pinlining and glossing boards adding color and decoration using resin. Most mass-produced boards use airbrushing for color and designs. Miyata did it by hand.Wayne is seen here charging big waves at Rincon and Waimea Bay.Donations can be made in memory of the surfing legend to The Surfrider Foundation - The Wayne Miyata Memorial Fund by calling 800-743-7873.Or online at Surfrider.org/donate
