Don Valley West
Campaign Politics Don Valley WestThe riding of Don Valley West is a study in contrasts. It includes the affluent neighbourhoods of Bridle Path and Leaside as well as the densely populated, lower-income communities of Flemingdon and Thorncliffe Park. The immigrant population is 46 per cent, and visible minorities make up about 43 per cent of the riding. This riding also has the largest Muslim population in Canada.Liberal incumbent Rob Oliphant is running for the second time. He currently serves as the Liberal multiculturalism critic and claims to have never stopped canvassing since the 2008 election. Oliphant is up against third-time Conservative candidate John Carmichael, who has lived here for most of his life and runs a successful car dealership. Physician Georgina Wilcock returns as the Green candidate and the NDP has nominated Nicole Yovanoff. The fifth candidate is Dimitrios Kibitsis for the Communist Party of Canada. CPAC’s Gail Dugas visits the riding to discuss the issues.
