How Typical are the Satellites of the Milky Way?
"We are interested in the cosmological context of the Milky Way — is it a special galaxy in any way? We found thousands of galaxies like it in the SDSS sky survey, and also thousands of matching halos in the Bolshoi simulation, and asked, how many have neighbours like the Magellanic Clouds? In both the real and simulated Universes we find that roughly 5% of Milky Way-like galaxies have 2 satellites like the Magellanic Clouds -- our galaxy is a bit unusual!" - Risa Wechsler video credit: Busha, Kaehler, Marshall & Wechsler, KIPAC/Stanford University.
