The U.S. Exploring Expedition of 1838-42, Part 2
In the second of a two-part program on American Artifacts , we continue our look at the United States Exploring Expedition of 1838 to 1842. The United States Government funded the military and scientific expedition of six Navy ships and hundreds of men to circumnavigate the globe, mapping Pacific islands and collecting specimens. The U.S. Ex Ex returned with over 40 tons of animal, plant, and ethnographic objects. We’ll see 170 year-old specimens and learn how they are still used for scientific research at the Smithsonian's Museum of Natural History. The Smithsonian was founded in 1846 and the exploring expedition artifacts were the basis of the institution.
