PrimeTime Politics Foreign Affairs Minister Lawrence Cannon joins Martin Stringer to discuss the details of Canada’s post-2011 mission in Afghanistan. The training mission starts at the end of next year and will last until March 2014. Up to 950 Canadian military personnel will be posted to well-defended NATO bases, mostly in and around Kabul. Canadian instructors will not accompany Afghan military or police trainees on active operations. Costs are expected to be $500 million per year. Steven Staples, president of the Rideau Institute, and Sun Media columnist Mercedes Stephenson offer their analysis on the plan.
