It’s just speck in the immensity of Chile's Atacama Desert but this grain of sand is the world's biggest and most expensive ground-based telescope project. ALMA, as it is known, is a consortium of scientists from around the world. They are combining brain power, funding and equipment: Sixty-six different antennae, some 15 meters high, are being installed to probe the universe with unprecedented precision.
