Painting Present: Curating Painting
The last of the series of events which explored the condition of painting now.20.05.2003 The last of the series of events which explored the condition of painting now.The series continues with a panel on the increasingly complex relationship between painting and curatorial practice. Curators who now seek to address the flourishing state of painting must also negotiate the legacies of conceptualism, installation, and institutional critique which have reframed the very exhibition of paintings. How can exhibitions not only address the continued desire to paint, but also accommodate contemporary painting’s promiscuous embrace of modernism, figuration, technology, and installation.Parkett Editor Bice Curiger will lead the discussion with Alison Gingeras, curator of Cher Peintre (2002) at Centre Pompidou in Paris, Douglas Fogle, and curator of Painting at the Edge of the World (2001) at Walker Art Center in Minneapolis.Painting Present is a collaboration between Tate Modern and the MA in Fine Art at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design bringing to London major figures working in or on painting to explore contemporary issues around this media.
