A four day fest dedicated to the sticky substance in Moscow.
Having trouble sleeping? Maybe you’re feeling too tired or need a boost for your love life? Russians seem to think that honey is the miracle cure for, well, pretty much everything. A look round a four day fest dedicated to the sticky substance in Moscow. In Russia, woodland honey is said to be good for the sight, hawthorn honey for the heart while honey spiced with coriander is apparently good for men. Salesperson at the fair, "It increases masculine strength for love." Russians are positively barmy about the stuff. This honey fair takes place twice a year in Moscow. Chestnut, cedar, buckwheat whatever flavour or texture you’re looking for, you’re sure to find it here, be it for pure pleasure or for medicinal purposes. Irina Tcherkassova, Beekeeper, "Honey improves your immunity and gives you more energy. And it’s not just a medicine; it also feeds the soul as well." In four days at the fair, more than 1,000 tones of the sticky stuff are sold. Some people stock up for the whole year, not wanting to risk having to eat foreign imports. Arnold Boutov, President of Beekeepers’ Union in Russia, "In Europe, the agriculture is intensive. Every bit of ground is used. Every square meter is taken up. Here, we have huge amounts of space and there are a lot of wild plants. In Russia, 80 percent of honey plants are wild." And it’s a tradition which oozes back centuries here. The English are said to have imported Russian honey as far back as the 16th century they even dubbed Russia as the land which smelled of honey.
