World Music: DDT, "Kapitan Kelesnikov"
(Europe) To this day, Russians remember the 2002 Kursk submarine disaster as tragedy brought about by governmental hubris; a botched job and a crude cover up that sacrificed the lives of an entire crew. (The government had refused international offers of help for the sunken vessel) Though the video and lyric for "Kapitan Kalesnikov" are literally quite dark -the animation lingers on the murky depths- the music from DDT and singer/poet Yuri Shevchuk is bright, martial and catchy. Shevchuck wrote the song in 2006 and performed it at a memorial service for the bereaved families.
