SPORE
Being one of the most anticipated titles of this year, Spore certainly has a lot of expectations to live up to. And with all the attention it’s been getting, it really looks like it's going to. If you haven't heard of it, Spore, developed by EA, IS evolution. That's right, evolution. The game allows you to create your own universe, going all the way from cellular growth to galactic conquests, this game literally promises it all. And did I mention it looks great too? The game itself is one of the most open-ended gaming experiences ever, and it's one of its key selling points as well. Going through five fully fledged "phases" you guide your tiny cellular creature from its humble beginnings to it's life as a creature, then its evolution into a tribe, then civilization, and eventually, space! The game designer, Will Wright, loosely associated several types of games and movies with each phase of Spore, starting with PacMan for the cell phase, Diablo for the creature phase, and up to SimCity, Civilization, and Star Trek and 2001: A Space Odyssey for the last phase of the game. Sweet. Almost everything is customizable and open for your own crafting. Everything about your own creature is as well, you decide what it looks like, how it walks, how it attacks, and everything else about it. The game is massive in terms of how much content it packs, from a small cellular world to an entire galaxy with hundreds of planets to visit. With each phase bringing significant gameplay changes, it almost feels as though you're going through video game history itself. Except this time, you get to personally mold it however you want. Spore promises to be the most unique gaming experience of all of 2008, so don't miss out on it when it ships for PCs and Mac OS X this early September! Oh, and don't bring your Scientologist friends.
