Grocery School: How To Buy Garlic
Find out what to look for when you buy fresh garlic on this lesson of Grocery School. Garlic is a very versatile herb that can enhance any dish. It is often sold in heads which contains 10-20 cloves. Most recipes call for only a few cloves of garlic, hence a single head/bulb will go for a long way. Unbroken heads can last for up to 3 months, whereas separated cloves will last for 5-10 days only. So, don’t over buy them your garlic. In the grocery store, you should always pick fresh garlic by touching and smelling them. • On picking head of a garlic, look for dry bulbs with off-white color. The skin of the garlic should have a prickly texture like the skin of onion. • Squeeze the bulb to check its firmness. If it goes in with little pressure, it’s over ripe and unusable. You should not but the garlic. • Check if there is any black spot or black in the bottom of the garlic. If black spot is present, do not buy. • Smell the garlic, if there is no smell, go for it. Strong smell from garlic shows it’s over ripe.
