World Music: Kou Chou Ching, "Gray Coastlines"
"Garbage is dumped everywhere by people who ignore the government,They boast about breaking the law; they live on kickbacks,Construction goes on; Politicians spit as they smooth-talk...Not even half of the natural coast of Taiwan is left...When will this environmental tragedy end?"(Taiwan) Kou Chou Ching has been spearheading conscious rap in Taiwan for years, and are gradually getting through to a new generation. They tackle issues like the environment, corruption, and restoring ethnic pride. This song is written in three different languages: Taiwanese, Hakka (Early Chinese settlers), and the language of the Yami people, aboriginals who live on Lanyu, off the coast of Taiwan, and who are known for their striking canoes and fishing skills. The song is about the danger to the Taiwanese coastline, as it is encroached upon by development and industry.Purchase the album.
