In 2012 draagt Turnhout een jaar lang de titel Vlaamse Cultuurstad. Dat heeft de hoofdstad van de Kempen vooral aan zichzelf te danken. Het idee om naast Europese ook Vlaamse cultuursteden te kiezen, is geboren in Turnhout. Oostende beet in 2010 de spits af. Turnhout volgt in 2012, precies het jaar dat de stad haar 800ste verjaardag viert.
