Over The Hill
Amos Winthrop (J.H. Gilmour), who heads a chain of yellow newspapers, has an idle son, Roy (William Parke, Jr.), who he puts to work at the Daily Pioneer, one of his small town papers. Roy and the Pioneer’s editor, Jim Barnes (Richard Thornton), both have a love for sensationalism, while Allan Stone (Chester Barnett), the business manager, and the society writer, Esther (Gladys Hulette), prefer "clean" journalism. Because of the Pioneer's yellow hue, department store owner Lawlor (Paul Clerget) has refused to buy advertising, which would put the paper in the black. Esther discovers that Lawlor's daughter (Joyce Fair) is planning to run off with an already-married baseball player, and she helps stop this potential scandal. But Roy hears of it and splashes it all over the front page. To keep the story from coming out, Esther burns the whole edition and destroys the plates. Lawlor happily contracts to advertise with the Pioneer, while Winthrop pulls Roy and Barnes off the paper. ~ Janiss Garza, Rovi LESS
