World Music: Habib Koite, "Massakè"
-Download the song(Mali) "They are little bourgeois. All these children are like kings. Their mothers carry them all over. Their fathers spoil them. The maid dotes on them." Many societies exalt children, but in this song, Habib Koite cautions that this kind of catering produces imperious, spoiled children who will enslave their parents and be unfit for responsibllity. He likens them to monkeys who destroy a peanut crop. The video was shot in Koite’s home town of Bamako, and the dance we see imitates the movements of monkeys. Everyone gets involved and has a great time doing a monkey dance....but we wonder if all those cute kids are completely aware of what the song is about!
