Tennis Too Boring? Try SPECKBRETT!
iReport — UPDATE: RELOADING SLIGHTLY NEWER VERSION IN ABOUT 1 HOUR. THIS ONE CAN BE REMOVED. INCORRECT COPY LOADED. ...SPECKBRETT?If you understand German, you’ll know that this literally means "bacon board." Play BACON BOARD? Yes. And yes...it really is the one from the kitchen. Germans are known to be quite innovative engineers and Munsterites have proven their hunger for swift, creative engineering is truly endless. It seems that in the small German city of Munster, the people have taken up BACON BOARD as a sport. While it has a few overlaps with tennis, it's a whole lot quirkier. And they are quite proud of it. Bored at camp one hot summer day, the sport began when locals literally raided the kitchen looking for ideas. They've modernized the sport slightly since then, and they'v designed several courts in Munster devoted only to the sport. There's also a World Championship of Speckbrett every August. But Wimbledon it is not. Despite hundreds of players and thousands of fans, it's really only Munsterites in attendance... They say they're not trying to hog all the meat though. Everyone is welcome to try a slice at Bacon Board...so long as they remember where it was first cooked up... WATCH and meet on of Munster's lifelong Speckbrett players.. www.speckbrett.de ---------------- Why not visit Munster and see it in person?www.muenster.de And, as I discovered, there's sooooo much more to Germany than most people know. Here's a good place to find out more:www.historicgermany.com Special thanks toSchwimmvereinigung Sports Club for the interview opportunity and archival photo permissions Filmed/produced with an amazing powerhouse Handycam, the Sony CX560V.
