World Music: Mariza, "Há Festa Na Mouraria"
(Portugal) While the African dances contributing to Fado’s history may now be hard to discern, the legacy of Portuguese poetry is readily apparent. The first great fadista that we know of was a woman named Maria Severa. Born in Alfama, a poor section of Lisbon she is attributed with a remarkable voice, and the habit of wearing dramatic black shawls when she sang - and of course the fact that she carried on an affair with a Count added to her mystique. Although there are no recordings of Severa, in this performance Mariza, (Fado's current reigning queen) pays tribute to her, and adds her own bit of panache - flamboyant leggings!
