Heiner Thorborg is Personnel Consultant, Active in the "Generation CEO" InitiativeDW-TV: Mr. Thorborg, tell us a little more about your initiative. Heiner Thorborg: Very briefly, Generation CEO is an accelerator as far as career development is concerned. I started it together with seven leading German companies - they had the money, I had the idea. I went out to identify these women. Now they’re on their way and today we have about 60 women, and it's very nice to see what you can do with individual coaching programs, to open up the old boy's networks - because all the CEOs are males, but they're very interested in this subject and it's wonderful to see how it's developing. DW-TV: Is this boy's club mentality still dominant? Heiner Thorborg: I think it sits in the women's heads. They perceive it as a stumbling block, but I don't think it really is. I think you can overcome it with a young generation of managers, and the senior ones, they have grown up daughters, and they want only the best for their daughters, so they're the best ones to talk to. They will do it all, they'll open up the networks, they will help, they will coach. So I think the time for female managers to move up the ladder is very ripe indeed. But they have to say they want it. If they don't we have a problem. DW-TV: That is the problem, isn't it, that women don't even bother applying for these jobs because they think, "I'm not going to get it anyway." How do you counter that? Heiner Thorborg: That is a problem, because really, women aren't like men. When a man gets a job offer, he accepts it without really thinking it through. He'll say, "I'll manage somehow." With a woman it's exactly the opposite. She'll think it through and have doubts and think, I'm not sure I can do it, and that makes it difficult for her superiors to say, "Just take it, and do it, and go." DW-TV: Are quotas the answer?
