The Estate Tax
It’s called the ultimate insult. Of the two 'givens' in life, death and taxes, this involves both. The Estate Tax, commonly referred to as the Death Tax, is post-mortem levy on accumulated wealth. Is it fair or even needed? Congress thought not and in 2001 enacted legislation to repeal estate taxes. However, because of a sunset provision, the estate tax will only by fully eliminated for one year and is scheduled to return in 2011. Will Congress uphold the repeal or will the death tax return? Are estate taxes a philanthropic subsidy or a burdensome tax on the rich? Join a panel of economists as they debate the many layers of this issue.
