Made in Germany Renaissance of Atomic Energy
While Germany is phasing out its nuclear power stations,many eastern European countries are planning to build new ones.Last month’s gas dispute between Russia and Ukraine severely disrupted supplies to the region. Now states,such as Lithuania,Latvia,Estonia,Poland and Albania,want to become more energy independent,with the help of nuclear power. Romania,alone,is planning to build four new reactors. Bulgaria's Belene nuclear power plant is already well beyond the planning stage. Bulgaria's national electric company NEK and Russia's Atomstroyexport are working together to build the plant. German companies Siemens and RWE are also participating in the 5.5 billion euro project. Karl Harenbrock went to take a look.
