The Netherlands: Border Puzzle
Baarle is a small town of 10,000 on the border between the Netherlands and Belgium. While Baarle-Nassau is Dutch, Baarle-Hertog is part of the Belgian province of Antwerp. It makes life confusing, because there are Dutch enclaves on Belgian territory, and vice-versa.In some places, the border even runs right through the middle of houses. You can sleep there with your head in Belgium and your feet in the Netherlands. Mayors, police forces, fire brigades — there’s two of everything in Baarle. In spite of that, the two populations get along quite well. At least they all speak Dutch.
