In June 2008, high gas prices hit pickup and SUV sales hard and huge second quarter losses at Detroit’s automakers compounded an already struggling industry. Then the collapse of the financial markets sent shock waves across the country, prompting the heads of Ford, GM and Chrysler to go before a U.S. House committee in seach of a federal lifeline.
