World Music: Roy Ashley Muyngarnbi, "Warrk Warrk (Black Crow)"
(Australia) Roy Ashley is a Songman, one of the keepers of the sacred legends laws and culture of Arnhem land in Australia. This song is part of a larger project called "Walking with Spirits" in which Tom E. Lewis, an aboriginal guitarist and didgeridoo player brought together four respected Songmen, in order to preserve the heritage they represent. Lewis was the bridge between the Songmen and the Caucasian band, figuring out the appropriate chords and meters on acoustic guitar. "Warrk Warrk" is the product of a continuing program in digital video training created by Djilpin Arts for disenfranchised youth in the remote community of Beswick and was filmed by 18 year old Amos Urban, who has participated in the program each year. In the video a Wagalak Songman (Muyngarnbi) embodies the spirit of the crow and sings it into being.
