Bulgaria: Freed from Prison to Go Campaigning
On July 5, the Bulgarians will elect a new parliament. In the European elections, the mainstream party GERB came in just ahead of the Socialists. But already there are murmurs that votes were bought. Whoever wins, the country must take bold steps away from corruption. But the election is already tending toward the farcical. Two jailed underworld bosses are on the ballot. And if that weren’t enough, a court has decided to set them free to pursue their campaigns.
