World Music: ChocQuibTown, "De Donde Vengo Yo"
(Colombia) This young group from Colombia’s Pacific region has really raised a stir, and for good reason. They present a compelling blend of urban and rural music-- the rural being rooted in the AfroColombian community. Many people from that community have been displaced to the cities, one of which is the city of Cali, where the group was formed. The name ChocQuibTown is an aggregate of real places: Chocó, the Afro-Colombian region, and Quibdó, its capitol. ChocQuibTown make music that reminds Colombians that 1/5 of the population is of African descent, and that this is something to be valued. Listen to the proud Hip Hop poetry of this group, and enjoy the rich visuals of black culture that combine Latin and Caribbean influences.Purchase the album.
