World Music: Kirin Ahluwalia, "Koka"
(Canada/India) This charming video is from Kiran Ahluwalia, who specializes in folksongs from her native Punjabi region. What makes her work far more accessible than a "pure" rendition is the addition of the guitar playing western style chords. These chords bring out the sinuous melody, enhancing its strength. The story is one that is often told, of a girl choosing between three suitors who all have some gift to offer - but only the third has exactly the right one. Fortunately in the video, she has two other friends who are appreciative of the other suitor’s gifts, and all ends happily.
