Fears of unrest in Togo as poll rivals claim victory
There were fears of possible violence in Togo Saturday ahead of official results from an election in which President Faure Gnassingbe and rival Jean-Pierre Fabre both claimed victory.Observers from the west African bloc ECOWAS said Thursday’s poll had been "free" but expressed concern about the authentification of ballot papers. The vote is widely seen as a test of whether democracy will find a foothold in this poor country of 6.5 million ruled for nearly 40 years by strongman Gnassingbe Eyadema and then, after his death, by his son. Besides Fabre and Gnassingbe, five other candidates were in the fray to be the country's next leader.
