Precision Atomic Physics at University of Washington / The Wellspring of Discovery
Atomic physics has been an important part of the research at the University of Washington since World War II, and it has been supported by the NSF since the 1950s. The NSF currently funds work on a precise atomic clock, measurements of the magnetism of a single electron, measurements of parity violation in atoms and searches of the nuclear electric dipole moment in Mercury. The Wellspring of Discovery This 50th anniversary symposium provides an opportunity to reflect on the agency’s role as a wellspring for discoveries. NSF's work has nourished discovery as well as our nation's economy; the challenge now is to sustain the exploration and to convey the "awed wonder" of science.
