Doctors Encouraged By Congresswoman’s Progress
Gabrielle Giffords, the U.S. congresswoman shot in the head last Saturday (January 8), is now opening her eyes and breathing on her own with little assistance from a breathing tube. She can move both legs, both arms and has indicated she can see with both eyes. Giffords is being treated in a Tuscon, Arizona hospital. Her doctors say she has made major progress, but still remains in critical condition. VOA’s Carol Perason spoke with a Washington neurosurgeon about what might lie ahead for Giffords in her recovery.
