ACT TWO Scene 23 On the backdrop of the stage appears a painted forest. On stage itself are small Christmas trees and other little trees, representing a forest through with a small path running through it. At the right side a young girl approaches. On her head she carries an earthen jug for water and in her hand a long blue silk ribbon. From the opposite side Stevan Music and Sluga Vaistina are coming. As they pass each other the maiden greets with a wave of her hand; the knights do the same in return. Suddenly Stevan looks at the scarf that the maiden is holding and says: STEVAN MUSIC: Hey girl, beautiful fay, Where did you get that silk ribbon/ Did you not get it by way of love? Would be so kind/ As to give me that ribbon for a moment, So that I can guess from which knight it is. THE GIRL: Hello Duke, HONOR SERB, I did not get this ribbon by way of love/ I found it this morning in the Sitnica/ Where the water carried it toward the shore. The Sitnica was full of blood this morning/ And corpses of Serbs and Turks/ So that I could not fetch any water/ And had to take the empty jug home. This ribbon I want to give to my brother as a present, That is no shame, is it The girl gives the ribbon to Stevan, who looks at it and then gives it back to the girl.
