Gunter Anderson Master Basket Weaver
Gunter Anderson collects her own wild Oklahoma grasses. She dyes her own Yucca strands. She carves her own eggshells. And she does all this to create the native Cherokee baskets for which she is famous. Anderson began basket weaving in the Navajo style; a few years ago she switched to her native Cherokee designs. Having finally mastered weaving the hardest component - the bottoms of baskets - Anderson is now skilled enough to teach others the ancient art. She constantly pushes herself to create more intricate and more beautiful pieces; shes currently working on her most difficult piece. She also weaves a special English-Cherokee basket that incorporates antlers, beads, and eggshells in to a fancy-handled egg basket. As a member of the Oklahoma Native American Basketweavers Association, Anderson passes her knowledge and expertise on to younger generations keeping the culture alive. For more, visit TravelOK.com.
