(Mongolia) We first saw Urna perform in a Russian TV music series that was sent to us in 2001, and which we were never able to acquire. We were struck by the range of her singing, from pleasant alto to piercing, accurate highs. Then we saw her again in Uzbekistan at the Sharq Taronalari festival, where she recieved an award after entrancing the audience with an a capella performance. Now, years later, we finally have a clip of this fascinating singer, in which she is accompanied by the Chemirani Zarb trio, an Iranian family of percussionists, with Jerzy Bawol on bayan. It’s a hypnotic song about the beauty of the steppes, and Urna utilizes the long held notes typical of singing from the region.
