UPS man survives tree falling on his truck
iReport — When the heavy rains and high winds hit in-town Atlanta, the hundred year old Oak trees begin to fall. Root systems that have died and become rotten, release the tree from it’s hold, as the quick and heavy storm waters lift the tree right up out of the ground as though the timber were rising from the dead. It is a Dangerous fact that the in-town dwellers know all to well. The storm, the sound of sirens and a tree lying on a neighbors house has become common place in these neighborhoods that are made up of some of Atlanta’s oldest suburbs. Today in Atlanta a quick but strong storm caused arbor driven bedlam.Around 7 p.m. I was watching the trees sway with extreme grace. The dance was growing in intensity as the rain hit harder and lightning cracked louder. Then the inevitable sound of sirens began to ride the wind.It took me three minutes in my car before I spot a fire truck marked #29. I have covered so many incidents with the firefighters of unit #29, that I am well on my way to calling these heroes friends.Sitting inside the fire truck is Detrius Carter who works as a UPS service provider. One hundred feet in front of the fire truck is a UPS truck that is completely crushed by what has to have been one of the largest trees in the neighbor hood. Mr. Carter is in charge of delivering packages in an area designated by UPS as route 22B. Mr. Cater was in his truck preparing to deliver a package to a home along East Rock Springs road when he heard a loud crack. Explaining that ‘something inside me told me to run’ Detrius Carter was inside the UPS truck when the tree dropped out of the sky and crushed the vehicle.Mr. Carter survived uninjured but was clearly shaken we when talked. Mr. Carter went on to say ‘I am just so glad know one was hurt and that no small cars where near my truck at the time, or someone would be dead.’
