Burma’s Elections Considered Undemocratic But May Offer Some Change
Some critics dismiss Burma’s first elections (Sunday, Nov. 7) in two decades as a sham designed to keep a repressive military government in power. The military is guaranteed a quarter of all seats in parliament, has the two largest political parties, and has largely sidelined the opposition. But some political analysts say, despite those limitations, the elections could allow dissenting voices in the government for the first time in decades. Foreign journalists could not go to Burma to cover the elections, so VOA's Daniel Schearf reports from Mae Sot, Thailand, on the border.
