General Electric Turns Positive; Spars With New York Times O
General Electric (GE) has reversed an opening bell loss and is fractionally positive at mid-day on a broader market rebound as the company contends with a New York Times report that it paid no taxes on $5.1 billion in U.S. profits last year. The company has launched a publication relations initiative since the report yesterday, declaring the Times article "simply not true." It said it paid state, local, payroll and other taxes.The New York Times has issued a statement saying there were no factual inaccuracies in its article, and noted that GE had not asked for a correction. Separately, French news agency AFP quoted a company spokesman saying GE didn’t pay any federal taxes because it didn't owe any.
