World Music: The Ukrainians, "Hungarian Dance"
(UK) Continuing with our presentation of cultural stews, we bring you the Hungarian Dance #5 made famous by Brahms (a German), performed by The Ukrainians, who are from the UK.They have made their name updating the music of Eastern Europe with a sometimes manic punk beat, then going it all one better by using that sound to interpret rock classics. (In all fairness, one of the members does in fact, trace his lineage back to Eastern Europe, but evidently this was discovered after the fact.) As Len Liggens of the band explains "(Brahms) collected the tune from migrants who had travelled from (or through) Hungary into Germany at the time. However, many of the migrants had originated from other countries first and many of the melodies Brahms collected were gypsy tunes from all over eastern Europe, including Galicia, an area currently shared by Ukraine and Poland. So the tune may very well be Ukrainian, Polish... or Hungarian, but versions of it are played in most eastern European countries anyway."The backdrop in the video is a pattern based on the "tryzub" the Ukrainian national symbol. Here it is repeated four times as a kind of compass, indicating the Ukrainian diaspora ("Diaspora" being the name of their forthcoming release). The video’s ultra-simple concept complete with lyrics reduced to "dai-dai-dai" are kept afloat by the band's deadpan humor. We like the guy in the center best. Visit The Ukrainians online
