Margaret River has upstaged a Taj Burrow led Yallingup team in lumpy 1-2 metre waves to take out the Western Australian round of the Jim Beam Surftag at Yallingup beach on Saturday.   On the back of some brilliant surfing by unheralded Dave Delroy-Carr and Jerome Forrest, Margaret River ‘A’ came from behind in the final, amassing 90.8 points to Yallingup’s 87.8 to win back the title they last won four years ago. The Surftag format sees five-member teams given an hour in which each individual must catch three waves, with the second being a “Powerwave” worth double points. All three waves for each surfer count in the scoring and bonus points are awarded for teams that finish before the 60 minute mark. Margaret River were also helped by superior clock management, the three points they gained as a bonus after their fifth surfer returned to the beach having caught his third wave within the final’s one hour time limit proving the difference. Margaret River ‘B’ was third with 84.3, while Geraldton finished fourth on 55.1 The top three teams from today’s round progressed through to face the country’s best clubs in the Jim Beam Surftag Australian final at Sydney’s North Narrabeen beach on February 13/14. Former professional Jake Paterson got Yallingup off to a dream start in the final with an opening score of 24.0 and when Burrow snared a near perfect 9.0 on his first wave and a three wave total of 22.5, to give their team a 9.5 point lead, it looked like the locals would claim their fourth straight victory. Margaret River’s third and fourth surfers Delroy-Carr and Forrest had other ideas however, scoring 21 and 19.9 points respectively before Jethro Headstrong ensured the victory by getting his three waves within the time limit.
