Young Actors Take to the Streets of New York
New York is a theater town, from Broadway to the smaller off-broadway theaters in other corners of the city. One of the smallest is a project called Downtown Art whose actors are teens aged 13 to 19. Each year, they put on an ambitious new play, written and directed by the troupe’s founder, Ryan Gilliam. This year’s play is "The Bowery Wars, Part 1," a musical about the early 20th century struggle for control of New York’s then seedy entertainment district along the Bowery in lower Manhattan. It's performed in the open air. VOA’s Carolyn Weaver has more.
