A New Beaver Pond in Danforth
iReport — Beavers are very interesting creatures, and cute, although I wouldn’t want to have one bite my leg. This occurred to me as me and Snoopy passed within a few feet of a beaver, who slapped his tail and disappeared under water. Snoopy took the leap in to the pond, as she is on a 26 foot flexi-leash, but just stood there in shallow water, evaluating the situation, and came to the same conclusion as I. It would be better to get out of the water. I imagine that certain animals prey on beaver, but not in their home environment of the water. Any animal that could chew great trees to fall down could definitely put a big hurt on your leg, and Snoopy must have instinctively realized this.I have watched a new pond develop this spring, where there was none before. Previous summers have been fairly dry, and the water in these gullies starts to dry up as summer progresses. But not this year. A family of beavers has created a new pond for them to live in, which they are very adept at doing. In fact, beavers in the southern end of Patagonia, in Argentina, imported years ago for fur, are devastating the forests, and seen as a dangerous pest. Not so, here in Danforth, their natural home.
