The Chinese authorities allowed the renminbi to appreciate modestly on Monday in the first day of trading since the end of the near-two-year currency peg with the US dollar was announced. Richard McGregor, former FT Beijing bureau chief, analyses the political reasons behind China’s decision to introduce greater flexibility to its exchange rate and he takes a look at how flexible it will be.
