伊朗拒絕由巴西，庇護面臨被處死的阿什塔尼。 伊朗駐巴西大使，拒絕由巴西總統盧拉提出的建議，又指案件只是涉及伊朗人，質疑其他國家為何介入。 43歲的阿什塔尼較早前被裁定通姦罪名成立，一度被判用石頭砸死；其後又被指有份殺死丈夫，伊朗國營電視台更播出片段，聲稱阿什塔尼承認控罪，但片段中的女子，容貌被特別效果遮蓋。 阿什塔尼的律師表示，懷疑當事人被屈打成招；美國國務卿希拉莉表示，深切關注這宗案件。
