Borys Wrzesnewskyj
Beyond Politics Liberal MP Borys Wrzesnewskyj was born in Toronto, the only son of Roman and Irene – both refugees from war-torn Europe. Once in Canada, both parents worked hard and saved enough to start their own business, Future Bakery, which became a landmark in the then-suburb of Etobicoke. Borys fondly recalls the smell of fresh bread and cinnamon while working in the bakery as a young boy. Borys did well in school, earned a commerce degree from the University of Toronto, and took over the family business when he was only 22. As a member of Etobicoke’s business community, Borys championed safe neighbourhoods. Borys also never forgot his roots and was a vocal proponent of democracy in Eastern Europe, chiefly in Ukraine. Following the retirement of Allan Rock in 2003, Borys was courted by both the Conservatives and the NDP to run in Etobicoke Centre. Instead he chose the Liberals and won in 2004. Borys and his wife, Lina, have two children: daughter Viktoria and son Felix. Borys Wrzesnewskyj talks to Catherine Clark about his life Beyond Politics.
