A Moose for Evans Mensah at The London School of Ecomomics
iReport — This i-Report concerns something I’m ashamed of, and not proud of. In fact, I have a lot of unresolved guilt, being that my father's side of the family was Jewish. After my report on the snapping turtle, and discussions with others, I had a bit of guilt that I had eaten and enjoyed the famous Bookbinder’s Snapper Soup when I lived near the now defunct restaurant in Philadelphia. And there is a certain amount of guilt that I have concerning a moose I encountered several years ago.I was driving on a dirt road, and a moose started running in front of my van, and I followed it. This was during rutting season in the fall.I stopped, suddenly realizing that Route 1 was near, and the moose ran from 100 to 300 yards up the road. I took about two minutes to drive the last distance, only to get to the intersection and see a logging truck swerve at night, and realized the moose must have stood on the road. If I had followed the moose up to the road, I could have chased it off the road, but I thought I was being safe, giving the moose some space to find an exit from the road. This all happened on the spot, wasn’t planned, and there is a long litany in Maine of a thousand and one moose encounters, of all sorts, between people, autos, and moose.Anyway, I saw the moose walk in to the woods, and saw where it had been knocked down. I heard the moose make noise out in the woods. I was ashamed of myself for the mistake I had caused. Later, I had to forgive myself, because I had stopped driving behind the moose, long enough for it to make other decisions, and as moose will do, it had decided to linger in the road, and apparently, NOT BOTHER TO GET OFF ROUTE 1 WITH A LIGHTED LOGGING TRUCK BARRELING DOWN ON IT ON A STRAIGHT, TWO MILE STRETCH OF ROUTE 1. I feel sad, just thinking about it.Anyway, I encountered another moose today, and thought I would share it with Evans. Evans is doing his doctoral thesis on whether us i-Reporters influence what CNN covers at The Londo...
